Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
