The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors are granted the option to contest particular decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
